I begin with an introduction to ‘the relational unconscious’ drawing on the book ‘Beyond Language in Relational Psychotherapy’.  I will describe the difference between the right and left hemisphere of the brain. Because the right hemisphere of the brain is non linear we make links through feelings, intuition, literature, poetry and image.

I will follow this part of the presentation with an experiential workshop based on the ‘Balint Chair’.

This model involves working as a group to dream, feel, and reflect together as we work with a case study presentation. You can bring a case that is currently perplexing you, be prepared to be involved, and we will discover what a difference a word makes!

This process reveals that which is hidden from our conscious mind. We will use this exercise to make links with our psychoanalytic legacy from Berne’s original book ‘Transactional Analysis in Psychotherapy’ (1961). We will examine how our identity as transactional analysts has evolved since that time, and take time to reflect on how this approach affects our legitimacy in the international professional community.
