Eric Berne created T. A. out of the legacy of his classical analytical training combined with his curiosity and genius. My teachers, Bob and Mary Goulding integrated the newly emerging theory of T. A. and of Gestalt therapy along with Berne’s and Steiner’s mention of injunctions. From that legacy, combined with their compassion they created Redecision Therapy and identified fifteen injunctions. This workshop will present fifty-plus years of building on their legacy. The material to be presented now identifies twenty-five identified Injunctive Messages (IM’s), including a methodology for their accurate diagnosis by identifying Coping Behaviors, and their resolution. That resolution includes identifying both the Despairing and Defiant decisions. The Despairing Decisions created false beliefs that are resolved when they are replaced by the Unsuspected Truths. Redecision Therapy is here presented as a process of integrating the Unsuspected Truths as they replace the False Beliefs and replace dependence on the Coping Behaviors. New behavioral skills (Resolving Activities) are included as aids. This process also includes the creation of a Dependable Parental Voice that is protective (from the power of the IM) and contains love, common sense, and agency. The themes of legitimacy and identity are woven throughout the change process for all five categories of I.M.’s: Survival, Attachment, Identity, Competence and Security.
