TA has continuously developed new theories and spread in different parts of the world, integrating new perspectives and shaping the community’s identity in a multifaceted way. As Richard Erskine observed, “Transactional analysis is examined as a unique culture that is in the process of continually changing.” (Erskine 2009)
In this process, how do we, as members perceive and experience our global community and the multiple frames of reference that come with the richness of different cultural backgrounds, TA fields, TA theory schools, …?
The workshop aims to raise awareness of the possible challenges of an expanding TA culture and how that shapes our identity. We also wish to develop some ideas on approaching these challenges ethically.
In this co-creative and explorative workshop, we will present and work with Perry’s* framework on ethical development—linked to TA concepts—to explore how we experience our relationship with multiple frames of reference as members of the TA community in our interconnected world.
* The “Scheme of Cognitive and Ethical Development” is a model based on William Perry’s observations on how college students experience knowledge and truth. He describes different stages of development: dualism, Multiplicity, Relativism, and Commitment to Relativism.
