By mentioning our roots, Eric Berne invented psychotherapy in TA as a model of social psychiatry practiced in group.
Fanita English used to say “for me, to work in TA is to work in group, that’s how I learned it : psychotherapy in TA was only practiced in group.”
Later on, TA individual therapy became more common, and only one out of three group recordings is actually demanded at CTA oral exams. Nowadays, the interest in group therapy is coming back.
Observation process seems to us a necessary step in the training of future group therapists, so we invented a model in which a group of students has opportunity to observe an “in vivo” group therapy led by a confirmed therapist.
We present a one hour film in which Fanita English is the therapist of a punctual group. The first part was recorded 32 years ago, then a second part was filmed in 2018 with Fanita and Isabelle commenting the previous work, and Isabelle leading another group in front of students observing it, and discussing afterwards.
We propose two formats :
- either 90 minutes to present the film and short exchange with the audience
- or more time to answer questions about Fanita’s legacy and advantages and disadvantages of group therapy.
