Recent decades have been marked by a demand for (more) fairness, inclusiveness, non-discriminatory policies and a mutual respect and appreciation between different social groups.

This is not surprising, as this demand corresponds perfectly with our natural need to be treated with respect and care. It is precisely this need that, if not adequately met in childhood, leads to adaptations and compensations that are not always harmonious and productive in adult relationships.

Berne was one of the first thinkers and practitioners to insist on the okayness of a patient or client and the need to have a dialogue with them on the basis of “I am okay – you are okay”.

The paper analyses how this is applicable and easy to do using the Authentic Autonomy model within the value based approach. Practical tools of the approach will be presented as well as reflections on the meaning of Okayness. It will be offered to discuss how the approach can help to avoid abuse of power or difficulties on the way to mutual understanding, fairness and relationships full of cooperation, trust, authenticity and love.
